About Headaches

Headache is one of the most common conditions that cause patients to see a specialist. At times there is no serious cause for a headache, but in other cases there may be a life threatening medical condition.

A neurologist receives extensive training in the diagnosis of headache, and is trained in the use of the latest medical tests to find a cause for your headache.

Our goal as specialists is to find the cause for the pain and begin appropriate treatment for it. Most patients will begin by filling out our medical history and questionnaire forms. We then perform a neurological exam in our office, and order the tests that are needed.

Our job is to help you!

Please ask any questions that you have about your condition!

Types of Headache

As neurologic specialists, we treat many types of headache, including:

  • Tension headache
  • Migraine headache
  • Cluster headache
  • Temporal arteritis
  • Trigeminal neuralgia
  • Sinus infection
  • TMJ disease
  • Stroke syndromes

Tension headaches most often cause a dull, pressure pain over most of the head including temples, forehead, and back of the head. Migraine headaches are often throbbing, pounding, and may cause nausea and vomiting. Cluster headache is a boring pain around the eye, usually in middle-aged men.

Tests for headache include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), CT scan, EEG, and lumbar puncture.

Treatment of Headache

There are many new ways which specialists treat headache. Many of these are very effective and have fewer side effects than earlier treatments. Many patients find their headaches are best treated by a neurologic specialist when they are frequent or severe, or not relieved by routine medicines.

Several medicines prevent headaches, such as:

  • Amitriptylline
  • Propranolol (Inderal)
  • Verapamil (Calan)
  • Methylsergide (Sansert)

In addition, there are new treatments for pain, including Imitrex injections, D.H.E. injections, and occipital nerve blocks.

Your specialist can help decide which is best for you, and can instruct you as to the latest treatments for your headache.
